Maktab A vs B vs C in Hajj: What You’re Actually Paying For
Two Hajj packages can look identical on paper — same cities, same dates, similar hotels — and differ by ten thousand riyals. Very often, the difference is one word buried in the fine print: the Maktab category. It is the single most under-explained item in Hajj pricing, so here is what it actually means, what each category buys you, and the questions to ask any operator before you pay.
What is a Maktab?
During the five days of Hajj (8th–12th Zil Hajj), every pilgrim on earth stays in the tent city of Mina. Mina is divided into numbered camps called Maktabs, each run by a licensed service provider (the Muallim) under the Saudi Ministry of Hajj. Your Maktab determines three things that define your Hajj days:
- Location — how far your tent is from the Jamarat (the stoning site). This is the big one: the walk from the farthest zones can exceed 5–7 km each way, repeated on multiple days, in heat, in crowds.
- Tent comfort — sofa-beds versus floor mattresses, air-conditioning quality, space per pilgrim.
- Food and service — buffet meals with 24-hour drinks versus basic catered trays.

What this does to the price
Look at our own Hajj 2027 price breakdown and you can see the Maktab effect directly. Our Value tier (Maktab C, zone assigned by the Ministry) starts at SAR 23,000 per person in quint sharing. Our Budget tier with an A-category Maktab starts at SAR 36,000, and the Executive, Bronze and Platinum tiers — all VIP Maktab A near the Jamarat — run from SAR 39,000 to 51,000. Hotels and durations differ too, but the Maktab category is a large, honest part of that gap.
The same Hajj is performed from every Maktab. What you are paying for is distance, rest and recovery during the most physically demanding five days of the journey.
Five questions to ask any operator
- “Which Maktab category is this package — in writing?” If the brochure doesn’t say, that is your answer.
- “Is the zone guaranteed, or assigned by the Ministry?” C-category zones are Ministry-assigned — any operator promising a specific location on a C package is promising what they don’t control.
- “What exactly is in the tent?” Sofa-beds or floor mattresses; how many pilgrims per tent; AC.
- “What are the meals in Mina?” Buffet with round-the-clock drinks, or tray catering.
- “Is Qurbani included?” Not a Maktab question — but the same fine print often hides it. (In our range, Qurbani is included in every tier except Value, and the Value pages say so plainly.)
How we sell it
We publish the Maktab category on every package page — A-category and VIP-A on our Budget, Bronze, Executive and Platinum tiers, and C-category clearly labelled on the Value tier, including the Ministry-assignment caveat. Choosing C to save SAR 15,000 is a perfectly good decision when you make it knowingly. Discovering it in Mina is not.
Frequently asked questions
Is Maktab A worth the extra cost?
For elderly pilgrims or anyone with mobility concerns — usually yes: the Jamarat walk from far zones, repeated over several days, is the hardest physical element of Hajj. For a fit pilgrim on a tight budget, C-category is the same valid Hajj at a much lower price.
Can an operator upgrade my Maktab after booking?
Maktab allocations are made through the Saudi system per season. Treat any “we’ll upgrade you later” assurance with caution and get commitments in writing before paying.
Do all A-category camps offer the same service?
No — “A” sets the zone; the service level (VIP tents, sofa-beds, buffet) is the operator’s arrangement with the Muallim. Ask for specifics, not just the letter.
