Women’s Umrah & Hajj: The Questions Every Female Pilgrim Asks

By Farazm Travel · Updated 13 August 2026 · 3 min read

Half the pilgrims are women, yet most pilgrimage content is written as if they weren’t. Here are the questions female pilgrims actually ask us — answered plainly, with the honest caveat that rules set by the Saudi authorities are confirmed as current at booking, and matters of fiqh belong finally with your scholar.

Travelling without a mahram

The landscape changed in recent years: current Saudi policy permits women to perform Umrah without a mahram, commonly in the company of a group — a major shift from the older requirement. Because entry rules are set season by season, we confirm the current position for your booking rather than quoting a rule that may have moved; the schools of fiqh also hold their own views on a woman’s travel, which is between you and your scholar. Practically: women travel in our groups regularly, and our departures include female guides as standard.

Ihram for women

  • No special garment: ordinary loose, modest clothing of any colour — the two white cloths are for men.
  • The face is not covered with a garment touching it in Ihram, per the majority position — your guide can explain your school’s detail.
  • All other Ihram restrictions (perfume, cutting hair/nails) apply equally; at release, women trim a fingertip’s length, never shave.

Menstruation and the rites

The most-asked question, and the fiqh is well established in outline: a menstruating woman enters and remains in Ihram and performs the rites of Hajj — except Tawaf, which is postponed until purity. For Umrah trips, the Tawaf and Sa‘i wait; schedules almost always accommodate it. For Hajj’s Tawaf al-Ifadah, defined provisions exist for those who cannot delay departure — exactly the situation your female guide and your scholar resolve together. Planning tip: if timing is predictable, mention it confidentially at booking; itineraries can be chosen with it in mind.

Rooms, privacy and the group

  • In sharing packages, accommodation is allocated separately for male and female pilgrims — printed in our terms; ask any operator for the same in writing.
  • Families wanting to room together choose the sharing level that makes it possible — the room-type pricing on each package page is exactly this decision.
  • Ladies’ sections operate in the Haramain prayer areas, and our A-category camps include air-conditioned Arafat facilities for ladies — the phrase to look for in any Hajj brochure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I perform Umrah while pregnant?
Many women do, with medical clearance appropriate to the stage and airline rules on flying. Tell your operator so pacing and assistance are planned — and take your doctor’s written advice with you.

Is there a women-only guidance session?
Our pre-departure training covers women’s fiqh questions, and female guides accompany the journey — ask anything without awkwardness; that is what they are for.

What should I pack differently?
The packing checklist covers it — add prayer garments, comfortable covered walking shoes, and unscented essentials for the Ihram period.

Every Farazm departure includes female guidance — browse packages or message us on WhatsApp; a female team member can take the conversation.
