How to Perform Umrah: A Step-by-Step Guide for First-Timers

Your first Umrah is equal parts longing and nerves — you have imagined the Kaaba your whole life, and you also don’t want to get a single step wrong. This guide walks the rites in order, in plain language, with the practical details first-timers actually worry about. One note of adab before we begin: the schools of fiqh differ on some details, and on the journey itself your Mutawwif (guide) is with you for exactly this reason — every Farazm group travels with one. Where details differ, follow your guide and your own scholar.

Step 1 — Ihram: the state, not just the clothing

Ihram begins before you cross the Miqat — the boundary points around the Haram. Flying into Jeddah, your airline announces the Miqat approach; most pilgrims change earlier (many at the departure airport or in Madinah if starting there) so the boundary never catches them unprepared.

• Men: two white unstitched cloths — the izar (waist) and rida (shoulders). Nothing stitched to fit the body; sandals leaving the ankle bones uncovered are common practice.
• Women: ordinary modest clothing of any colour; the face is not veiled with a garment touching it, per the majority of guidance — ask your guide about your school’s detail.
• Before entering: ghusl (bath) is a sunnah, men may apply perfume to the body (not the garments) before the intention.
• The intention (niyyah) for Umrah is made at or before the Miqat, followed by the Talbiyah: Labbayk Allahumma labbayk… — repeated often from here until the Tawaf begins.
• Restrictions now apply: no perfume, no cutting hair or nails, no hunting, no marital relations, and no arguments — the last one is tested by every crowd you will meet.

Step 2 — Tawaf: seven circuits of the Kaaba

Enter Masjid al-Haram (right foot, with the du‘a of entry), and let yourself have the moment when you first see the Kaaba — then begin:

• Tawaf starts at the Black Stone corner (the green laser line on the marble marks it). Face the stone, raise your hand toward it saying Bismillah, Allahu Akbar — kissing it is a blessing when possible, but in crowds the gesture from afar is complete. Never push people for it.
• Circle counter-clockwise, seven times, the Kaaba on your left. The semicircular wall (Hijr Isma‘il) is part of the Kaaba — walk around it, never through it.
• Men: for this arrival Tawaf, uncover the right shoulder (idtiba‘) and walk briskly with short steps (raml) in the first three circuits — both are sunnah for men only.
• There is no fixed du‘a per circuit — recite what is in your heart, in any language. Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone, Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah… is the sunnah.
• After the seventh circuit: two rak‘ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if you can reach it, anywhere in the mosque if you cannot — then drink Zamzam, which is available throughout.

Step 3 — Sa‘i: seven lengths between Safa and Marwah

Proceed to the Mas‘a (the Sa‘i gallery). Begin at Safa, face the Kaaba, praise Allah and make du‘a, then walk to Marwah — that is one length. Seven lengths total, finishing at Marwah (Safa→Marwah = 1, back = 2 …).

• Between the two green lights, men jog lightly (sunnah); women walk throughout.
• The floor is smooth and the gallery air-conditioned; wheelchairs and electric carts are available on the upper levels for those who need them — relevant if you travel with elderly parents.
• Sa‘i is physically the longest part — roughly 3 km in total. Unhurried is correct.

Step 4 — Halq or Taqsir: leaving Ihram

The Umrah completes with cutting the hair: men shave the head (halq — greater reward) or trim all over (taqsir); women trim a fingertip’s length from the ends. Barbershops surround the Haram for this. With it done, the restrictions of Ihram end — your Umrah is complete. Take the moment; many pilgrims say it is when the tears finally come.

Practical wisdom your first time

• Timing beats pushing. The gentlest crowds are typically late night into pre-Fajr; the heaviest follow the congregational prayers.
• Carry a cloth shoe-bag — you will not lose your sandals to the shelf shuffle.
• Hydrate before, Zamzam during. Makkah heat is real even at night.
• Fix a lost-and-found meeting point with your family before entering — phones struggle in the densest crowds.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Umrah take?
Commonly two to four hours door-to-door depending on crowds — Tawaf and Sa‘i are each roughly 45–90 minutes at a calm pace.

Can Umrah be repeated during one trip?
Many pilgrims perform additional Umrahs by entering Ihram from Masjid ‘Aisha at Tan‘im, the nearest boundary. Ask your guide about the etiquette and your school’s view.

What if a woman’s period begins during the trip?

Is Umrah obligatory?
